Dear Dr. Tedros, 

We would like to draw your attention to the exacerbating health conditions in Kurdistan, Iraq due to the pandemic outbreak of COVID-19. The main reason behind the deterioration of Kurdistan’s health conditions is the Kurdistan regional government’s evasion of responsibilities towards its citizens’ health and safety. The responsibility of facing the pandemic was placed entirely on the citizens as all the hospitals lack oxygen supplies, adequate health services, testing centres, and centres that receive and care for infected individuals. Additionally, hospitals are unable to provide sterilizing materials, disinfecting supplies, or any of the personal protective equipment. Furthermore, the most concerning problem is the absence of doctors and health professionals from the workplace as they have declared a strike due to the Kurdistan regional government’s  refusal to pay their salaries for the past six months.

The increasing rate of infected individuals with COVID-19 along with the increasing rate of fatality, in Kurdistan, due to the corona virus, reflect the reality of the government’s reluctance to provide the essential services and take the necessary measures to contain the pandemic.

We call and urge you to intervene directly by pressuring the Kurdistan regional government to carry out its responsibilities. We also encourage you to provide the assistance necessary to contain the pandemic and decrease the death rate of infected individuals with this virus. We hope that you consider this letter and take further action to help save the lives of millions affected by the Kurdistan regional government’s negligence.
